MODIFIED PILATES CLASSES
"The attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a
sound mind, fully capable of naturally performing our many daily tasks
with spontaneous zest and pleasure."
Joseph Pilates (Founder of Pilates)
WHAT?
Pilates is now a well known form of exercise and rehabilitation, but
there are many different forms of Pilates. This can make it difficult to
find the right place for you. Many questions are often asked: Is Pilates
safe? Who benefits from Pilates? Should people do Pilates if they have
back pain, have had surgery, are injured or pregnant?

The Pilates classes taught within gymnasiums and health clubs commonly
teach traditional Pilates exercises that are very physically demanding
on the average individual. These exercises can be unsafe for some people
because they incorporate long lower limb levers that place large loads
on the lumbar and cervical spine.
In direct contrast, Modified Pilates, developed by the Australian
Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute (APPI) and taught by Oneway
Physiotherapy, focuses on retraining the deep abdominal, pelvic floor
and lumbar muscles that researchers have found to be vital in
stabilising the spine and preventing and rehabilitating LBP (Hodges
1999; Hides et al., 1996). Hodges (1999) identified that these muscles
form a 'cylinder of stability' for the spine that provides continuous
tonic muscular support to the lumbar spine and pelvis.
Oneway Physiotherapy introduces Modified Pilates classes that are
suitable for everyone. Have you ever attended a Pilates class and not
really known which muscles are supposed to be working? Or felt that you
weren’t given enough feedback from the instructor? You may even have an
injury and have not tried this exercise for fear of making your
condition worse.
Oneways’ Clinical Director Jo’s classes are designed to be very
different. Class sizes are limited to a maximum of 12 people, making it
easy for each individual to have one to one feedback about how they are
performing. All participants will be screened for injury/postural
concerns meaning that Jo will be aware of individual limitations and
also which exercises are really relevant for you.

WHY?
Ten reasons to try Pilates:
1. Improve posture
2. Relief from back pain
3. Aid recovery from injury/prevent injury
4. Achieve restful sleep
5. Improve strength and stamina
6. A way to relax and beat stress
7. Improve incontinence
8. Improve your balance and coordination
9. Pilates can help prevent osteoporosis
10. Low impact no-pain mantra

session focuses on teaching the correct starting position and posture as
well as how to activate those all-important core muscles.
